ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nature of the gender pay gap with an in-depth discussion of how it is measured. It shows the female-to-male earnings ratio and the female-to-male earnings growth rate ratio over time. When women's earnings grow at a faster rate than men's, the female-to-male earnings growth rate ratio is greater than 1 (>1), and the female-to-male earnings ratio increases. Both females' and males' earnings growth rates were 1.0% in 2017. The chapter presents the inflation-adjusted median weekly earnings for both genders using 2018 dollars and compares it with the nominal earnings. It also presents the earnings gap in dollars, so we can get another picture of the gap. The gender pay gap depends on the definition of income being used in calculating the gap.
