ABSTRACT

The magnitude of the gender pay gap varies in the United States. This chapter addresses the gender pay gap over time for different demographic groups. Black women who had the smallest gender pay gap compared to black men's earning, now have the second largest gap when compared with white men's earnings, 65% of what white men are earning. Ironically, the less educated women fare better than the more educated women when it comes to the gender pay gap. Overall, women 25 years and older have a gender pay gap of 19% regardless of their levels of educational attainment. The chapter shares data about the female-to-male earnings ratio and the female-to-male employment ratio in selected jobs. Women working in the federal government have the smallest gender pay gap of 13%, followed by those who work in state government jobs with a gap of 18%, and then those who work in local government offices with a gap of 22%.
