ABSTRACT

Some children are clearly ready for school and can’t wait to go, while others find the whole idea overwhelming. However, each child is different, regardless of any disability. Mainstream schools and nurseries can expect support from local authority specialists to ensure the child can access the curriculum and move around safely. They can provide direct training to staff, as well as the child’s peer group. As the transition point from home to school is so major, one should receive support from a habilitation specialist. Many children start school or nursery unable to undertake simple dressing tasks, but staff are often stretched getting everyone ready to go outside to play. Foundation stage usually have toilets close to, or immediately off, the teaching area. The habilitation specialist will make the child familiar with the route to the toilets, and their layout. Schools may be anxious and feel that the child is vulnerable outside with hundreds of other children running around.
