ABSTRACT
Some Anglican Catholic churches ring the Angelus regularly, especially if there is a religious order of monks or nuns attached to the church. In the process of liturgical reform there is a stress on the importance of both ‘religious ritual’ and ‘civic ritual’ where the church congregation is the reference. In order to understand more adequately what is happening in religious ritual it is necessary to develop the Durk-heimian distinction more fully, and in some respects rather differently. There are civic rituals which attempt to motivate men to make sacrifices for a social group, such as the rallies of political movements, various expressions of nationalism, and army rituals. A set of rituals which have been revived by Anglican Catholics in the Church of England, derive from their conception of the Real Presence of Christ in the consecrated bread, from the Eucharist.
