ABSTRACT

Recognising that many of the topics covered by the term ‘green industrialisation’ were the subject of policy-making before the term itself existed, this chapter and the next summarise the policy and support programme literature covering the specific regimes of green industrialisation described in Chapter 2. This chapter focuses on the first dimension of green industrialisation, namely greening industry: what any enterprise can do to green itself. It summarises the policy and support programmes for the four regimes of greening industry: pollution control for abating conventional pollutants released from plants into the environment; resource efficiency and cleaner production measures implemented within plants; energy management for energy efficiency and use of renewable energy to reduce GHG emissions; and chemical and waste management inside and outside of a plant but for which companies are responsible. These summaries draw on published reports and articles to give an overview of relevant policies and support programmes. For each regime, there is then a summary of reports and studies on policies and support programmes which have either been adopted by SSA countries or have been discussed for possible adoption by these countries.
