ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies areas for further research about policies, support programmes, and data needed to monitor and accelerate the greening of industrialisation in SSA countries. While recommendations are presented for several policy regimes, two recommendations cut across all areas. First, there is a paucity of information both about the economic and environmental dimensions of green industrialisation and about the implementation of existing policies and support programmes that have the potential to drive green industrialisation. Second, there is a need to recognise that greening industry requires more than just a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to which SSA industry is a minor contributor in the global context. Successful greening of industry also requires significant reductions in conventional pollutants in urban areas with concentrated industrial activity, improvements in production efficiency needed to reduce the energy and water intensity of outdated technologies, and effective management of chemical and hazardous waste, as well as attention to the social dimensions of development.
