ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 is about international law in Rwanda. It covers the process of creating, incorporating, and positioning international law in the Rwandan legal system. It also discusses in detail three key fields of international law to which Rwanda has recently made stronger contribution: Human rights law, International Court of Justice, and international criminal law. With regard to human rights, the chapter presents an overview of key international and regional human rights treaties ratified by Rwanda and human rights bodies that it is actively participating in. The chapter also discusses key cases the ICJ has heard that involve Rwanda as well as their contribution to international law. With regard to international criminal law, the chapter discusses the contribution of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda as well as that of domestic courts in prosecuting and punishing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
