ABSTRACT

Historically there has always been considerable movement of students seeking better education across countries and India is no exception. The UNESCO’s global flow of tertiary level students’ statistics captures outbound and inbound movement of students for all the member countries. With greater globalization and a more integrated economy, it is but natural, that the global footprint will increase — in both directions. Even though Indian universities and other education institutions have opened campuses abroad, at present, no government department has made this data available in the public domain. There is no database available on faculty exchange programmes which has started to take place more commonly in management, medical colleges etc. Data on foreign students coming to India from the UGC give us a better picture in the sense that it is possible to do a country-wise or a course-wise analysis and is also recent enough to do a time series trend analysis.
