ABSTRACT

Indians are enrolling for higher education courses at a much higher rate than ever before; the country is amongst the top rankers when it comes to enrolment and enrolment growth globally. The low enrolment in tertiary education is due to the lower enrolment of women than their male counterparts. Though the enrolment of women in higher education is lower, it has been increasing at a sharp pace, but the choice of courses and skills remains skewed in favour of ‘soft’ disciplines. Even as the private sector has been playing a progressively larger role in the provision of higher education, it is crucial for regulatory authorities to focus on the quality of education being provided across the sector across in both public and private institutions. The availability of unit-level data provides the opportunity for deeper as well as wider analysis. Professional education is an important branch of higher education which has traditionally been combined with technical education.
