ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 discusses some of the common pitfalls of sharing information electronically and the potential changes that the new legislation have made to direct marketing. Basic guidance on cybersecurity and ideas on how to keep your data and the personal data of others safe together with an explanation of some of the terminology that abounds in the “technology environment”. Most organisations operate in a dynamic technological environment, which includes computers or devices on most desks, a company website, social media accounts, use of personal devices and apps as well as legacy platforms. Whilst it is comparatively obvious of the need be careful with physical copies of sensitive documents people tend to be less aware when it comes to handling the information on their electronic devices (especially if they are using them away from the office environment). The chapter contains a section on emails which provides examples of how to address emails (using To, CC and BCC), mail merging, email encryption and password protection, email tracking , retention and archiving. There is a useful section on direct marketing which provides guidance on sending marketing emails, marketing consent, opt in and opt out, and “re-permissioning” emails. The chapter concludes with guidance on physical security matters.
