ABSTRACT

Like climate change, the refugee crisis is a symptom of a form of out-of-control global capitalism. Current political ideologies weakly hide more sinister political economic agendas that relate a very focused, aggressive and hungry pursuit of a profit, which threatens to kill off the very planet we occupy. This chapter is therefore about making a summary of our transition into this “out-of-control” situation, which has seen the inequality gap widen drastically and poverty and unemployment increase and how in rendering whole countries and, in some cases, regions obsolete, swathes of people are both internally and externally displaced. It therefore talks about the increasingly precarious nature of millions of people across the globe using examples from the food industry to highlight how its expansion damages the environment and ruins the lives of millions of people.
