ABSTRACT

In this penultimate chapter, the discussion develops to explore participant responses to the final semi-structured question, serving to explore hope, concerns, fears and aspirations. Themes arising from participant accounts include the fear of religious intolerance and bigotry in Malaysia, in addition to the turn towards increasingly illiberal, sectarian, tribal conflict. The chapter also explores accounts of holy guardians and references to malign influences. Contrasting participant attitudes towards religious conversion form another area of discussion, along with faith-inspired virtuous conduct. The prophetic Buddhist epoch of Mappō foregrounds discussions of the apocalyptic.
