ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concepts of relative pronouns and relative adverbs, focusing on the fact that these words introduce relative clauses, which can add important details to sentences. The chapter begins by explaining what relative pronouns and relative adverbs are, providing examples of them, and showing what those examples can look like in writing. After that, the chapter discusses the importance of relative pronouns and relative adverbs to effective writing, providing published examples that show their importance. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which features a fourth-grade teacher’s work helping her students understand this concept. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about relative pronouns and relative adverbs. It concludes with final thoughts on this topic and a series of steps teachers can use to support students who need extra assistance understanding relative pronouns and relative adverbs.
