ABSTRACT

Chapter one of Unequal By Design introduces the arguments around high-stakes testing and equality, and it offers some of the broad theoretical and conceptual framing of the book. Specifically, this chapter discusses the relationship between schools and social reproduction, highlighting the how critical educational theory has treated this relationship. This chapter also offers some basic understandings of high-stakes, standardized testing, explains the author’s positionality, and gives a brief overview of the book.
