ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 explores the process of threat assessment. Although the threat assessment process described in this chapter applies to any identified risk, the chapter tends to focus on school shootings and youth violence for purposes of explanation as to how to neutralize the risk before an incident can occur. This chapter raises the question of whether identifying risk factors and early warning signs related to violence reduces the number of violent acts that take place at schools, businesses, or entertainment venues. To best address this question, this chapter explores the research and intelligence that has been gleaned from past violent events in order to determine whether early detection can lead to the reduction of violent acts in schools and other places.
