ABSTRACT
Detectives are responsible for criminal investigations. This chapter is about the work of detectives, the police officers who are responsible for criminal investigations. A criminal investigation is a lawful search for people and items useful in reconstructing an illegal act or omission and analyzing the mental state of the person or persons committing that act or omission. The chapter continues with an account of how a crime scene is best handled and how evidence is secured.
