ABSTRACT

The Khokhar chief realized the futility of further resistance, sought a peaceful settlement and offered to accept the position of a vassal. ‘He put on the robe of Brahmins, kissed the surface of the ground like a slave and placed his head at the hoof of the swift steed of the king.’ the Sultan rejected the unanimous advice of his counsellors on the ground that he had taken a vow to occupy Hansi and, therefore, he was bound to accomplish this task in all circumstances. Sultan Abdul Rashid and nine members of the royal family were killed by Tughril Hajib, who had been sent to occupy Sistan. In a battle fought on the ferry of the Jhelam, the three Ghorid commanders – Sultan Muizzuddin, Qutbuddin Aibak and Shamsuddin Iltutmish – performed exemplary deeds of valour. The death of Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish marked the beginning of a series of revolts by the military commanders posted in different parts of Panjab.
