ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with internal digital communication and the possibility to develop, strengthen and streamline internal communication through digital media. It emphasizes the widespread over-confidence in the power of digital communication and the ability of digital media to improve internal communication in organizations. Internal social media is meant to increase the quality of communication and create effectivity, collaboration and a stronger organizational culture. Many intranet managers can attest that the pace of technology development around the web is high, but there is internal slowness. In reality, the possibility of interactivity in the intranet has existed for a long time, but new social functions of the intranet have started becoming more common. Swedish National Television intranet also offers several social functions that are primarily used within departments, and to a lesser extent between coworkers in different departments. Digital social channels and intranets have great potential to contribute to sensemaking and to drive coworkers to contribute to the success of the business.
