ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some projects in renewable energy and reviews causes of the initial failure of the projects and subsequent successes. Africa has a great potential to become a gold mine in clean energy through its abundance of renewable energy in solar and wind resources. The motivation to introduce renewable energy resources was to provide environmentally friendly power supply to businesses and homes given the inability of the national power supply to meet their needs. The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program predicted that the number of Nigerians without access to electricity should increase over time. It suggested that local photovoltaic systems have the potential to fill in the energy shortfall, while the federal government shores up national energy production and policy. Lagos State Government jointly commissioned and funded its Renewable Energy Initiative with the UK Department for International Development.
