ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 starts with the early sociological inputs from Durkheim and Tönnies about community, to establish the ‘community questions’ in the historical core of sociology, in which the process of modernisation seemed to challenge what was regarded the ‘social glue’ of society. Further, Schamlenbach, with the term ‘Communion/Bund’ challenges some of Tönnies concepts of Gemeinschaft/Gesellschaft, relevant for today’s weight on fraternity. Two last themes are included in the chapter, primary groups (Cooley) and social control (Follett etc) to finish a perspective in which community is solidarity. This chapter is first and foremost aimed at establishing the historical community question as a core theme for sociology.
