ABSTRACT

For many people, work is one major arena of community. In this chapter the ‘concept’ of work is inclusive, starting with the very traditional industrial workers collective, moving on to more modern emergency call centre work, knowledge work (with the hospital clinic as case), loose working communities (flexible specialisation, co-working spaces), co-located independent work (laptop people in cafés), and last but not least voluntary work (‘dugnad’, community engagement). The chapter communicates that work communities are developed on basis of various social processes, in which some are essential for the performance quality (coordinating emergencies), other are fostering collective creativity (co-working spaces), while other are more to be considered comfortable or pragmatic (café laptop people).
