ABSTRACT

The last chapter sums up some of the broad lines presented in the book, by addressing community in various layers, communicative; material; biographic-cultural; practice-based; and situational. This is followed by a ‘consequential turn’. First, we discuss divided communities and how increased inequality is potentially leading to fragmented communities/societies and loss of general/systemic trust. Then we continue with a discussion of latent communities, that may occur through such different situations as riots and online support groups. As communities may be both destructive and lead to ignorance, they are not to be taken for granted as positive in their nature. Participants in extremist networks are connected together by the same social mechanisms as we find in more societally constructive communities. We finish the book with a reflection of how communities are communally constructed and how this on both complicates and make possible various (re-)formations of communities.
