ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the nuts and bolts of the processes by which the Maya renaissance is being promoted and the transnational Maya community is being imagined, partially realized and consolidated, especially as these processes flow in and out of Indiantown. In the years since Burns wrote about the internal and external identity of the Indiantown Maya, their residence patterns and work niches have become even more distinct. The media also informs the public about the Mayas and, at times, the Mayas use the media to establish a public identity and manage their image. The incipient pan-Maya unity and the growth of the Maya renaissance movement are also aided by frequent and multi-level communications among United States Maya concentrations and across national boundaries, with individuals and groups in Guatemala and even Mexico.
