ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a broad overview of statistics and is divided into three sections. First, we describe how statistics are now an important part of society and directly affect all of us. The Internet has ushered in a new era of data collection. Data analytics refers to the statistical analysis of all of that data for purposes like advertising, political influence, and health monitoring. Next, we provide a quick overview of some of the basic terminologies used frequently in the field of statistics. This section includes definitions of statistics, parameters, types of variables, different sampling methods, and various research designs. Finally, this chapter concludes with a section describing different kinds of distributions and an illustration of different ways to graphically represent data, when each type of graph is appropriate, and how to read and interpret different kinds of graphs.
