ABSTRACT

This chapter articulates the theoretical framing of this book, by way of elaborating the conceptualization of ‘minority participation’. Stemming from the notion of ‘critical multiculturalism’, the chapter draws on recent debates in Media Studies and Performance Studies to discuss how second/third generation ethnic minorities could nurture in them a nuanced and contradictory sense of belonging to the host culture. It also introduces the notion of ‘participatory performance’, combining concepts of minority sense of belonging, creative class, as well as participation, the book lays out the conceptual foundation from where the ensuing chapters will build on.
