ABSTRACT

The last of the chapters considering terminology looks at gender diversity. The most frequent term used throughout history has been ‘hermaphrodite’, and this chapter includes an examination of the fluctuating nature of that term before it was replaced more recently with ‘intersex’. ‘Transvestite’ is also considered both as an interchangeable definition of homosexuality and as a modern concept under the trans umbrella. Bearded women are not often included under the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, however there are reasons for looking at whether they should be included in gender diversity due to a physical excess of male hormones and their association with hermaphrodites. Another term used for hermaphrodite is ‘epicene’, or someone with a doubtful gender. Also included are examples concerning gender diversity without recall to any set terms or phrases.
