ABSTRACT
This chapter will consist almost entirely of supposition and extrapolation. The oral transmission of Germanic heroic legend is entirely lost to us. We have a number of written documents that may be fairly close in form and content to the oral tradition, but we cannot be certain that any of them are literal transcriptions of oral texts. They have all gone through some kind of recomposition or editing on the part of the person who committed them to writing.
