ABSTRACT

The Nibelung legend consists generally of the story of Siegfried/Sigurd, his youth, bridewinning, and murder, and die story of the fall of the Burgundians, who in most Norse sources are simply called Niflunga. The Northern versions of the story place more emphasis on die family of Sigurd, the Volsungs, and on the deeds of Sigurd’s relatives. This is expanded to the greatest extent in the Icelandic Volsungasaga, which traces Sigurd’s ancestry back to the god Odin (Wodan).
