ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 outlines the three main categories of markets for cogeneration by using a classic division of big – medium – small for the CHP sector. As a result, in Chapter 5 the EU-28 is divided into these three categories in a balanced way: eight member states are tagged as big CHP players (Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom), while ten EU countries are labelled as medium (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden) and small (Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, and Slovenia). For each of the reviewed countries a short description of past and recent developments of cogeneration is prepared. This covers several aspects: the regulatory framework with policies, tools, and measures on cogeneration as well as the statistics on CHP – with the share of CHP in total gross electricity generation, total CHP installed capacity in electricity, total CHP installed capacity in heat, and total heat produced in CHP aggregated in the selected time-frames.
