ABSTRACT

The art class should set students up to create outside of class, and so students must be considered as more than just students. Their myriad experiences must be taken into account so that students feel like they are autonomous within the classroom. Students who are treated as blank slates will not learn the confidence they need in order to move forward and discover their art. It also means considering how to teach students to work alone. In order to be independent, creative artists, students must be equipped to work with skills beyond the art class where they are completely alone with their work. That means teaching them how to work when they are alone, how to find inspiration in the smallest of acts. Seeing students as artists outside of class and teaching them skills that will aid them in their daily lives, art will naturally incorporate itself into their awareness.
