ABSTRACT

Encourage students to bring finds from home, to continue work outside of class. Art teachers must show students that what they notice outside the class and what interests them is an important part of making art. Their world as artists will be opened up when they see art and inspiration everywhere, and will encourage students to continue creating outside class. Art teachers must bridge the gap between school and home, but a large part of that is bridging the gap between what students think art is and what it can be. Take them on class trips to show them the many possibilities for art, open up their minds to more than the classroom so that students enter the world with an open mind. Art can take so many forms that students may never consider, including how they work away from the art class. Discuss in class how each student best works at home, allowing students to work outside the norm. Let their interests play into what kind of studio they create. They should bring their interests and passions into the classroom, and in doing so bring themselves to the classroom, understanding that their art is only limited by what they think is possible.
