ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 introduces the concept of liaison, specifically /r/-liaison which is a characteristic feature of British English speech. It deals both with the use of /r/-liaison when there is an <r> in the spelling, e.g. sore eyes, and when there is no <r> (analogical /r/-liaison) as in saw eyes. The chapter also devotes a section to the unfortunate way in which /w/ and/j/ liaison are sometimes taught in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
