ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 returns to stress in unstressed syllables, notably the effect this has on grammatical words. It discusses the weak forms and contractions found in personal pronouns, possessive adjectives, articles and quantifiers, prepositions, the verb BE, the auxiliary verb HAVE, the auxiliary verb DO, modal verbs, conjunctions. The chapter concludes with a useful summary of the contexts in which these grammatical words take strong forms rather than their more usual weak forms.
