ABSTRACT

Migration, a very popular subject of interest for geographers, is discussed in this chapter. Before delving into the main discussion, the chapter introduces the readers to basic concepts and terms along with various measures of migration analysis. In addition, a detailed account of general theories on migration is also presented. Major international migration streams during the modern time (1500 to 1900) are explained with the help of a map, and main features of international migration in the contemporary world are also examined. Further, patterns in the rate of migration are also discussed. Likewise, the section on India includes discussion on trends in population mobility since 1961, internal migration by distance and streams for 2001 and 2011 censuses and reasons of migration in 2011, apart from spatial patterns in population mobility based on state- and district-level data.
