ABSTRACT

Beginning with an introduction to various concepts and measures of density and distribution, the chapter proceeds to a geographical account of population distribution in the world and in India. Based on data on population and geographical area for the major regions of the world, the chapter highlights unequal distribution of population and associated physical, socio-economic and historical factors underlying this unequal distribution over the globe. With neatly drawn maps the main features of population distribution in the world and in India are discussed.
