ABSTRACT

The number one obstacle to change is inertia. The term inertia comes from the Latin root for inert, which means lacking the ability to move. The law of inertia, also known as Newton's first law of motion, states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. In the scheme of obstacles to Electronic Health Record (EHR) governance processes, resisters are the group that use their energy to actively push back. One final obstacle worthy of discussion is clarity regarding decision rights. Transparency about decision-making and decision rights needs to be approached in two ways. First, every group should have a meeting cadence that establishes a predictable rhythm for the business. Second, there is a need to connect and coordinate governing groups that should collaborate on specific decisions.
