Be mindful of the need to engage in impactful change quickly by looking for audacious projects with broad reach. In one large healthcare organization that the author worked with, providers were consistently complaining that their Electronic Health Record (EHR) user interface was clunky and disruptive. Quantitative baseline metrics were run for the month before the pilot and then again after the pilot ended. Written, web-based modules and virtual training were conducted, and at-the-elbow support was provided for the first ten days. EHRs made documentation onerous and unfriendly. The earliest versions of the more popular health records were designed to capture discrete fields of information to satisfy the data incentives required to qualify for meaningful use dollars. Physicians found themselves engaged in a never-ending game of point and click within long, poorly customized documentation templates. The notes returned were long and cryptic.
