ABSTRACT

Innovation will challenge the capacity of Electronic Health Record (EHR) governance processes in the coming years as intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs work fervently to transform the aesthetics, usability, and functionality of the EHR. Intrapreneurs will be disrupting themselves from within their own organizations, while entrepreneurs will be launching or refining business models that disrupt from outside. Design thinking is considered by many to be the holy grail of innovation — a concept made famous for solving wicked problems through a process of rapid-cycle iteration focused on user experience. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a stress test of EHR governance processes' ability to be nimble and responsive. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, EHR telehealth has grown from a $3 billion to a $250 billion industry, a game-changing event for physicians and patients alike. As telehealth continues to mature, providers will expect features such as video embedded within the EHR, integrated coding and billing, and a strong focus on patient experience.
