ABSTRACT

The heart of Electronic Health Record (EHR) governance is optimizing EHR design. However, EHR design cannot and should not happen in a vacuum. To ensure success, it must be coupled with a define function and a discover function, which one will refer to as the three Ds (define, design, and discover). EHR design work is intended to ensure patient safety, elevate care quality, and achieve the optimal user experience. Discover, the second D, references the ability to aggregate and normalize disparate sources of data into a single place for analysis and insight. Originally the idea of big data was associated with the concepts of volume, variety, and velocity. Today evidence-based medicine (EBM), expressed through guidelines and care pathways, is the very heart of delivering a high standard of care. Evidence-based practice is a form of critical thinking that helps the clinician use EBM effectively and efficiently.
