ABSTRACT

Electronic Health Record governance is about change and successful change begins with a pressing need. In his landmark book Leading Change, John Kotter calls this a sense of urgency, while Simon Sinek points to a similar path telling people to Start with Why, and the first step of the widely embraced Lean Six Sigma DMAIC methodology is to clearly define the problem. Urgency is triggered by two things: opportunity and anxiety. Opportunity generates a momentum that matures the organization in a positive direction and sustains itself over time. Solution jumping is people's brain thinking too fast. When considering a problem, especially a problem presented with a certain amount of urgency, their brain digests sound bites while filling in the empty space to create a coherent story that makes sense. The tools one use to prevent solution jumping can and should feel messy and confusing at times.
