ABSTRACT

Leadership is the lynchpin of a successful Electronic Health Record (EHR) governance model. When pulling together one's EHR governance guiding coalition, seek diversity. Aim for inclusive representation from all key groups that have a stake in EHR governance processes. Behavior is an essential ingredient to coalition success; avoid naysayers, nihilists, and narcissists. Shooting down creative suggestions prevents the coalition from innovating and growing. Mastery is about seeing progress and is reinforced by sharing results. This desire to see improvement contributes to our inner satisfaction and is not usually financially motivated. Existing problems made more visible by the EHR include limitations in quality improvement (QI) tools that have always constrained the scope of QI interventions. What may be different in the EHR era is the expectation that simple changes in the EHR could and would lead to instant changes in care quality.
