Foley artists will get requests that do not necessarily make sense to them. There is a plethora of stories that float around the editing rooms and Foley stages about requests that are either impossible to do or more appropriately done by editors or special sound design. Sometimes sound editors are not certain about what they want, and other times they cannot communicate what they hear in their own imaginations. The purpose of relating this story is to illustrate that some Foley cues will not make sense to the artist, even if they do make sense to editors. Communication is always essential, and to ask for more information about what the artistic intention is can help the Foley artist a great deal. Sound professionals have often been asked to create unusual sounds with the expectation that anything can be done on a Foley stage.
