ABSTRACT
A notable number of films are lauded as having great sound. What denotes an exceptional sound job is up for debate, but sometimes even the most celebrated films are actually loaded with so many sounds that the ear is overwhelmed. An overtly loud soundtrack containing multiple noises in it is not necessarily the best, most artistic, or tasteful track. Many films demonstrate an effective use of Foley in film. Foley is a supporting player in these films and can be studied to better understand its intrinsic value to the narrative in the film. Foley is used for different purposes, depending on the genre, style, and intention of the director. The genre of comical farce utilizes Foley to emphasize character, humor, and plot in Peter Bogdonavich’s Noises Off. The film begins as people watch actors rehearsing a farce that is going on the road to prepare for its debut in New York.
