ABSTRACT
This chapter departs from conventional academic writing to present a fictional account of a conversation between three friends. This conversation captures the everyday challenges that lecturers face around responsibility and relationships in today’s higher education. It is fictionalised but entirely based on the data provided by those who took part in the author’s research study. There is a sub-text about academic freedom, and the aim was to raise questions about the changing responsibilities individuals have for teaching in universities and whether or not some professional judgements by lecturers will be no longer be tolerated as freedom is eroded. The chapter ends with three important questions for lecturers to reflect on. Each question could also be the basis for future research.
