ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the topic of circular economy and its main associations with the sustainable operations and supply chain management discipline. It is a relatively new area within the subject of operations management that is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. Engagement with the SMEs is tailored to their individual activities, and includes exploring new circular economy markets, revenue streams, and business models. The Industrial Revolution started at the end of the 18th century prompted radical changes in the economy, transforming agricultural and artisanal production eventually into large-scale manufacturing systems enabled by highly mechanised factories. A strong emphasis on developing the sustainability of organisations has been gradually changing the way businesses operate in the economy. Improving the sustainability of production and consumption systems is the main purpose of the circular economy.
