ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the topic of sustainable operations strategy. The traditional operations strategy frameworks have usually addressed the sustainability dimension simply as a market requirement. The chapter sets the scene for how all dimensions of sustainability need to be considered in the decision areas of operations strategy: capacity, supply network, process technology, and development and learning. It explores the formulation, implementation, and assessment elements of a sustainable operations strategy. Strategic alignment between corporate and business strategies and functional strategies is key to the successful development of a business. Ken Platts and Mike Gregory's audit procedure is a useful tool for the preliminary phases of operations strategy formulation. The traditional tools for operations strategy formulation remain important and necessary, particularly to improve operations performance and the survival of the firm, which is only one of the aspects of business sustainability. The adoption of sustainable operations practices must support the implementation of a sustainable operation strategy.
