ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the production function of an organisation, which is core to operations management and can involve the production of manufactured goods or services. The production function, sometimes referred to generally as a production system, comprises inputs, transformation processes, and outputs. In the light of the importance of production for the wealth and the growth of a country, it is easy to understand that manufacturing and service production as an industrial sector has a considerable impact on sustainability. The chapter focuses on manufacturing within the overall scope of production in countries' economies. The benefits generated by green manufacturing can be understood by considering the different types of value they are able to create. Schenkel et al. define four types of value: economic, environmental, information, and customer related. Production planning plays a significant role in achieving energy efficiency. In addition to its impact on the environment, production also has a considerable impact in terms of social sustainability.
