ABSTRACT

The greatest crisis that ever occurred on the earth was about 251 million years ago when over 90% of the then existing species became extinct. Extinction of species on earth is a regular feature of evolution, but mass extinctions, like the one which occurred 251 million years ago, ends up in a huge spike of extinctions over very short periods. Applying the strategy triangles principles to the evolutionary cycle on earth, the fundamental variables (i.e., the space, time and action axes) appear as depicted. The equivalent strategy triangles diagram for organizational evolution, as will be seen, would exactly superimpose on the nature’s mechanism of evolution. Firms’ performance improvement levers correspond very closely to the levers of nature’s evolution. Mechanisms that can be applied across the lifecycle states of a firm (i.e., continual improvement, re-engineering, innovation and transformations) correspond to non-genetic defense mechanisms, genetic re-engineering, species innovation and the combination of extinction followed by species innovation.
