ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out key elements of the conceptual framework that this book relies on and draws together, encompassing gender and resistance, nonviolence, and social movement theory. In so doing, it examines how popular resistance, nonviolence, and violence are viewed and discussed in Palestine (particularly by women), and explains the function of nonviolence as an analytical concept. Given that use of the term ‘nonviolence’ with regard to Palestine often carries political and normative significations, this chapter is important in setting out the reasons for the book’s focus on nonviolence/popular resistance and why it is still of relevance to a study of Palestine.
