ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of themes or topics in mathematics teaching. The starting point for many LEA courses on planning for the National Curriculum has included the use of themes or topics as a vehicle through which it is possible to plan to include other curriculum areas. The chapter explains four case studies; two describe a theme or topic approach and two describe specific subject teaching. Themes of ‘Children’s Games’ and ‘Birds’ by Jill Harmer began a mathematics INSET course. The National Curriculum programmes of study endorse identification of pattern in number and algebra as major areas. Prediction before plotting the points would encourage the children to look for pattern and shape of outline. It is important that children check that they have plotted the points correctly and that the shape either fits their prediction or that they have identified why it differs from what was expected.
